Q: Started having buzzing and ringing in my ears, mainly the right ear. Was told there wasn't much any doctor could do. Is this right? This came out of no where. Am I going to be deaf.
Veronica, Peoria

A: Recent onset of ear noise (tinnitus) may resolve on its own. Persistent tinnitus is usually an indication of progressive hearing loss, albeit slow in progression. Over-the-counter medications, such as Tinnitus Relief Formula and Ear Health Formula have a 25% effectiveness. A complete audiogram is advised to "work-up" the tinnitus, and to determine if it related to a hearing impairment. Some causes of tinnitus include: stress, excessive caffeine, TMJ problems (e.g., clenching the jaw closed), upper respiratory infections causing a fullness in the ear(s).
